Welcome to the Family, Tim

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Musicadium is very proud to welcome Tim to the team as the newly-created Promotions and Development Manager.

Tim has joined us to expand the brand of Musicadium to all new audiences the world over.

Tim moved to Brisbane from Rockhampton, QLD, 6 months ago with his partner, Sara.

Tim started his music career by the way of Education.  As in, he was an IT teacher who decided that music was calling him.  He began booking bands into O’Dowd’s Irish Pub in Rockhampton and soon enough was booking gigs with some of Australia’s best bands, such as I Killed the Prom Queen, Dead Letter Circus, British India, Ash Grunwald and Dukes of Windsor.

After some time, he was selected to head up the Rockhampton chapter of the A-Venue project, an Arts Queensland funded project, created to upskill and inform regional original musicians about the wider music industry.  Tim first heard about Musicadium through his association with Q-Music and Deb Suckling.

Feel free to drop him an email to say hello!

Tim is into Dead Letter Circus, Birds of Tokyo, The Paper and The Plane and The Getaway Plan.

NZ’s Danny McCrum Band

Monday, October 13th, 2008

We were lucky enough to catch up with Danny from NZ’s blues/rock/jazz oufit Danny McCrum Band. They’ve acquired a great following in NZ, a place that (beached whale jokes aside) has a vibrant and exciting music scene that supports quality artists. Danny McCrum and his talented band have supported the likes of Joan Armatrading, Tommy Emmanuel and John Mayer, and show no signs of slowing down.

Check out their website here, or grab their album ‘Awake and Restless’ from Danny McCrum Band

Hi Danny, thanks for taking the time to chat to us!

Richard Thorne from NZ Musician magazine described you guys as “…a rock band with unexpected twists. Driven by joint guitar mastery, which means lead and rhythm roles can be swapped at will, it rocks along… undemanding, soulful rock and blues, but with a healthy quotient of pop and even the odd jazz sensibility.” I havent heard many bands that are described as rock and jazz! How did this come about?

I can’t be sure about what exactly Richard was referring to, but at a guess I would say that the combination of our influences and the range of musicians that played on the album meant there were all sorts of ideas brought to the mix. He might’ve heard jazz in some of the chordal movements, the sax parts, the vocals… I’m not sure. Our emphasis has always been on the song rather than categorizing our music by genre or style. We never discuss it. I think categorizing should only be retrospective and by somebody else… like Richard for example. Or by the CD stores when they’re trying to decide what section to stock it in. It shouldn’t come in to the creative process. By thinking along these lines, we end up with lots of surprises and a really creative experience.

You’ve toured with Tommy Emmanuel and also supported Joan Armatrading and John Mayer. Who would be your ultimate artists/acts to play with?

Tommy, Joan and John Mayer would be my favorites out of the artists I’ve supported, simply because I was already a fan of their music and then got to meet them, work with them and be a part of their shows. I would also love to support Sting, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Ben Harper, John Butler Trio….. I could definitely name a lot more too!

What is next for the Danny McCrum band? Any plans to tour Australia?

We are planning on touring Australia in the near future. We were supposed to be over this year, but other projects distracted us. I would say we should be there early next year. We’re also about to go back to the studio to record some new singles in preparation for the next album. Aside from that, we’re very busy gigging at the moment (see dannymccrum.com) which of course is what we love doing the most.

Calling All Rock Star Stories

Friday, September 26th, 2008

This week we were very lucky to have Graham Ashton who is the head of Marketing and International Licensing of Aussie indie label Dew Process (The Grates, Sarah Blasko amongst others) come to chat with the Musicadium team for a music industry Q and A.

Asho gave us some wonderful insight into his experiences with the music industry and both the indie and major labels that he has worked with. He also told us some great Rock’n'Roll tales that included private jets, Prince, and a whole lot more. We’d like to hear from our Musicadium artists - What has been your most Rock’n'Roll moment? The most interesting response will be posted on our blog and in the newsletter next week.

Musicadium Speaks at BigSound

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Big Sound 2008 was a resounding success on all fronts. Music industry folk travelled from all over the world to attend Queensland’s week of weeks in the music biz and to consume their fair share of business, bands and beer.

Highlights of the week included; Jonathon Poneman’s (CEO and co-founder of Sub Pop records) debonair yet passionate approach to the current musical landscape, a high-powered and highly entertaining Q and A session with John Watson (John Watson Management and Eleven Records), Michael Chugg (Chugg Entertainment) and Sebastien Chase (MGM) and the panel that Musicadium’s general manager Nick Crocker shared with the big wigs in the digital music world including Luke Bevans from Universal and Mark Bulgin from MySpace.

If it is at all possible to get along next year we would recommend Big Sound to anyone who is musically-minded and wishes to make some great contacts while being inspired by the world’s best musical minds.

Chiki Musicadium Party Wrap-Up

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Last Thursday night the Chiki Musicadium Party rocked Barsoma as music lovers came together to celebrate Spring and the beginning of the festival season.

The night kicked off with a special performance from Triple J’s Queensland Unearthed winner, Joe Barbaro, who hadn’t performed in front of a live audience in two years. Joe proved to be worth the wait as he kicked off the night in fine form.

Kissy Trouble was next to take to the stage, delivering a beautiful set with her combination of soothing acoustic guitar sounds and sweet vocals.

Benjamin Hooper and his band had the audience bopping away to the funky sounds of the saxophone, while Steve Grady impressed the audience with his song-writing skills.

The night finished up with a performance from the Hungry Kids of Hungary, who got the crowd dancing once again to their catchy tunes.

Overall the night was a great hit and fun was had by all.

Musicadium would like to thank all of their fantastic artists who made the night possible. We are already getting pumped for the next Musicadium party which we will be announcing soon and are looking forward to meeting more members of the growing Musicadium family.
