SNOBs interviews Musicadium Director, Michaela

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Our lovely director, Michaela, has been profiled by SNOBs, Social Network for Opportunistic Businesswomen!

The Lady in Charge: Michaela Tilse (Director of Marketing & Artist Relations)
Business name: Musicadium
Location: Fortitude Valley, Brisbane
Launched: February 2008
Website: www.musicadium.com

Hit us with your elevator pitch:
Musicadium work directly with independent music labels and self-released artists, enabling them to sell their music to a global audience via the world’s leading digital outlets such as iTunes, eMusic and Amazon MP3.
In industry terms we are an “aggregator” - contracted directly by the outlets to distribute to their online stores a constant supply of music albums and music videos.

What drove you to go it alone?
Musicadium is headed by three directors, including myself, and an incredible team of full and part-time staff and interns. We need to be at the forefront of the ever evolving, new digital music and internet industries so - as a team - we’re constantly learning and trying new things.
When you “go it alone” you get to be very innovative and experiment with fresh ideas, which we see as a luxury.

Fill in this sentence: “If I had a dollar for every time someone said…….. I wouldn’t need to be in business!”
We’re often asked, “How cool is it to work in the music business? Do you hang out with rock stars, trash hotel rooms and get back stage passes?”
We do get to meet and speak with some amazing people and get to see some great gigs but day-to-day it’s a lot of online work; blogging, answering emails, business strategy meetings, etc.
It’s a very small industry and everyone gets to know each other so trashing hotel rooms won’t necessarily help if trying to do a big deal with a large label or business!

If you’d like to grab a little bit of the spotlight for your new business [and you're a woman, in business in Australia] send SNOBs an email.

This week’s Hottest Cover Art - Angels are Architects

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

This week, it’s Angels are Architects’ Cover Art that we love!

Angels are Architects formed in mid 2004 with the premise of creating music that would help a hurting heart get to sleep at night. The band always look forward to delivering their melodies and their message to anyone anywhere who wants to listen.

Guitarist Phil Whitman and drummer Andrew Mitchell met in primary school and forged a lasting friendship through a mutual love of music. Under the guise of “The German Happy Club” they duo busked around the streets of Canberra. Their desire to get in out of the cold and play their original music led them to add Andrei Lena on bass and Amber Mitchell on vocals, and they became “The Fallen”. The Fallen only ever played a handful of gigs until mid 2005 when they entered the Jim Beam National Campus band comp and, to their very great surprise, took out the ACT State final. The national final turned out to be a little more than their limited outings had prepared them for but they took a lot from the experience and started a solid gigging schedule around Canberra, their home town.

2007 saw the band record their debut EP. This turned turned out to be Andrei’s final outing with the band as his life was taking him in another direction. The parting was sweet and he still writes for and spends time with the band. Melanie Wundke was then recruited on bass and group changed their name to Angels are Architects. The group has since toured in South-East Asia stopping over to play a series of shows at the Mosaic Music Festival in Singapore. The band has also appeared on MTV, played live to radio and had a whole lot of fun along the way. Angels are Architects find it a constant struggle to pinpoint their genre as all members draw from completely unique tastes. The music has been described as atmospheric rock meets electronica/dance. At gigs they have been compared to artists ranging from Lamb to Muse.

Angels are Architects launched the long-awaited self-titled ep in November 2008 to a sell-out crowd at the Serbian Club.

Foxx on Fire are our headline act for the Musicadium WITH DIGITAL LOVE Showcase on 19th March.

Check them out on MySpace - http://www.myspace.com/foxxonfire or Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Foxx-on-Fire/16561065002

We fell in love with Foxx on Fire’s tracks as soon as they came into the office and when we decided on an electro/rock theme for our showcase, they were the first ones who came to our minds.

Inpress magazine Described Foxx on Fire as …the big label A&R’s wet dream.” They have supported acts such as John Foxx (UK), Midnight Juggernauts, Felix Cartal (France), Lost Valentinos, Mercy Arms, Grafton Primary, Damn Arms, Sweet Machine (Germany) and Dukes of Windsor. Their video clip for their new single, ‘Mission Abort’ was recently indie clip of the week on ABC TV’s Rage.

Mission Abort is their new single and we love it!

Video Voyeurism: Joel Davies - When I’m with You

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Musicadium Artist, Joel Davies has decided to donate 100% of the sales profits from the first 10,000 songs to charity - www.msf.org. Check out his great film clip for his song, When I’m with you, featured on Rage on ABC2 in Australia.

From Joel’s MySpace:

Two and a half years ago in ‘06, I realised I needed to do something about the unhappiness in the world. I picked up a guitar, and learned to sing and write. My music is only a vehicle for me to talk about helping others. I do it because it is the right thing to do. This first album is now available through iTunes. I have decided to donate 100% of the sales profits from the first 10,000 songs to charity - www.msf.org. I have put a number on it to help us with a target.

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world without hunger, poverty, violence or discrimination; where every man, woman or child has the ability to contribute? The people we help, will have the ability to help others someday. Also, please forward this to your network to spread the awareness. Remember, this is not about me. Together, we can move our world forward. Nothing is impossible. You can begin with a simple smile… =)
