Feed Your Musical Appetite with the Hungry Kids of Hungary

Every so often, an act comes along that stops you in your tracks. You feel the need to tell everyone about them, play them continuously, find out everything about them and basically cling to the fact that you found them first. The Hungry Kids of Hungary are one of these acts.

With glowing reviews from JJJ’s Richard Kingsmill, Nick Findlay and the Courier Mail’s Pat Whyte to name just a few, Brisbane act the Hungry Kids of Hungary are gaining attention and momentum at a rapid pace. By fusing indie, soul, and 1960s pop/rock, these local Brissie lads have produced an EP that once listened to, will not be forgotten. The Musicadium team agrees that this is a band to watch, see, dance to and rave on about to anyone who appreciates quality music and brilliantly-crafted songs.

Firstly, congrats on a great EP. How did the launch at the Zoo go on July 3?

Dean (vocals/guitar)- Thanks a lot! The launch went really well. We had a great time and a solid turnout which made us happy in the tummys. We were a little bit nervous, but now its over we really just wanna play some more shows with lots more bands.

You’ve been getting quite a bit of notice from JJJ, and in particular Richard Kingsmill. How did it feel to have one of Australia’s premiere music industry critics/journalists commenting on your music?

Ryan (drums) - I can only imagine the sheer volume of music he would get sent to him. For him to take the time to listen and even comment on our music was a big surprise. We initially had some good comments from Richard on our demos earlier in the year which was great. Since releasing our EP we have had some great feedback from Richard and also other presenters at Triple J. We just received news today that our track ‘Set it Right’ has been added to rotation on Triple J- so we are stoked.

How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?

Kane (vocals/keys)- Our sound is a mixture of old and new. We are inspired by 60’s and 70’s british music, but at the same time we love a lot of indie stuff from the 90s and naughties. It’s quite eclectic- bits of pop, rock, blues and even soul. We aren’t adverse to harmonies either.

What new Aussie and International acts are exciting you at the moment?

Kane (vocals/keys)- We have all been getting into the Fleet Foxes album. The production is gorgeous and on their Youtube vids they are so tight. I hope they come to Australia soonish. Locally, I’m really enjoying Firekites and Sparkadia.

Dean (vocals/guitar) – I went to see Snowman and Baseball at the Zoo recently. Both bands were incredible.

What would be your ideal venue to play at?

Kane (vocals/keys)- Brixton Academy in London would be rather nice. Any old theatre with magic acoustics!

Who (living or dead) would you love to jam with?

Benny (vocals/bass)- Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher). That would be amazing. Who knows what the hell would happen!

Ryan (drums) – Frank Zappa. Although I’d need to be a lot better to play with him, as he only ever seemed to play with the best players around.

You mention that even Grandma’s can get into your tunes, ever had a senior citizen bobbing along at a gig?

Benny (vocals/bass) Actually my Nanna came to one of our very first gigs! We dedicated a song to her and she had a blast. She used to drive around listening to Nine Inch Nails, but now she’s mellowed out a bit and our band fits in quite nicely. She’s a wild Nanna.

Finally, what are your plans for the next few months? Where can we catch a live show?

Dean (vocals/guitar)- We are really just trying to play live as much as possible until the end of the year. Our plan is to record some more tunes in a couple of months. We have some local and interstate shows coming up over the next few months which should be fun.

The World Bar (MUM) in Kings Cross SYDNEY- August 15

Valley Studios with Little Scout and Buick Six, BRISBANE - August 22

Valley Transmission Showcase, Brunswick St Mall, BRISBANE- September 13

QPAC Outdoor All Ages show with The Boat People, BRISBANE - October 11

We have some other dates in between that you can grab off our myspace if you fancy!!
